Refracting telescopes: what is a refracting telescope, what is a refractor telescope and what refractors cost
A refractor is the shape everyone draws when asked to draw a telescope: a lens at the front, an eyepiece at the back, a sealed tube in between. It gives the crispest image per millimetre of aperture on this shelf and the least aperture per dollar, and both of those facts come from the same place, which is the price of good glass.

What separates one refractor from another
- How many elements in the objective. Two elements is an achromat, and it shows a violet fringe on bright objects. Three elements of specialised glass is an apochromat, which does not, and costs several times as much.
- Focal ratio. A short fast refractor gives wide views and suits cameras. A long slow one gives higher magnification per eyepiece and suits planets.
- Aperture, still. A 61mm apochromat gathers a quarter of the light of a 130mm reflector. It is a better instrument for photographing wide starfields and a worse one for looking at faint galaxies.
- What it is for. Refractors are bought either as small, quick, no-maintenance instruments or as premium imaging optics. The middle of the range is where reflectors win on value.
The printed spread, and why it is so wide
Explore Scientific prints $91.00 on sale for a 114mm reflector while William Optics prints $498.00 for its cheapest refractor, and the two figures describe completely different products. The refractor is an apochromat built to sit in front of a camera sensor; the reflector is a beginner instrument built to be looked through.
William Optics' store prints the model name and the price and no aperture, so this index publishes none. That is worth noticing on a premium refractor in particular, because on this design the objective's size and its glass type are most of what you are paying for.
What the extra elements fix
A simple lens brings different colours to focus at slightly different points, so a bright star or the limb of the moon carries a violet halo. A second element of a different glass largely corrects it; a third, of specialised low-dispersion glass, corrects it to the point where a camera cannot see the difference.
For visual use on the moon and planets a good two-element refractor is perfectly pleasant and the fringe is a curiosity. For photography it is a defect that shows in every frame, which is why the price of apochromatic glass is a photographic price.

- A telescope whose main optic is a lens at the front rather than a mirror at the back. Light passes through the glass rather than bouncing off it, which is why the tube is sealed and needs no collimation.
- Refractor or reflector for a beginner?
- A reflector, almost always, because the money buys more aperture. A small refractor wins if the instrument must be grabbed and used in two minutes with no maintenance at all.
- What does apochromatic mean?
- That the objective brings three wavelengths of light to a common focus, using specialised glass, so bright objects carry no colour fringe. It is the single largest cost driver in a premium refractor.
