Year labels sell telescope articles and describe very little. Optical designs are centuries old and the physics has not moved, so the honest version of a 2025 list is about which categories changed and which are exactly where they were.
What has genuinely changed
Smart telescopes went from a curiosity to a category, with several brands and real competition. Strain wave mounts brought high tracking accuracy into light packages without counterweights. Push-to finding, using a phone camera to work out where a telescope is pointing, arrived on ordinary dobsonians at low cost.
What has not changed at all
Aperture still decides what you can see. A dobsonian still gives the most of it per pound. Collimation still takes five minutes. The atmosphere still sets the ceiling on most nights, and a beginner is still best served by the largest instrument they will carry outside without thinking about it.
How to read any year's list
Ask what the ranking is built from. If it is a score with no method behind it, it is a commission table. If it is aperture, printed price and published specification, it is checkable. This index publishes the second kind and links every figure to the page it was quoted from.
