The brands that print a price
Five of the eight in this index do, in US dollars, on their own store: Celestron, Explore Scientific, Sky-Watcher, William Optics and Lunt Solar Systems. That makes them comparable, and it is why they carry the rows in the table on this site.
The brands that do not, and why
Bresser publishes openly in euro and sterling, which is a currency problem rather than a transparency one. Vaonis publishes a full specification and puts the price behind a shop that serves no figure in the page. Unistellar serves a store page that a fetch reads as empty. What publishing a price does not tell you
Nothing about optical quality. Sky-Watcher prints a price and no aperture; William Optics prints a price and no aperture either. Some of the finest optics on this shelf come from firms that sell only through dealers. Transparency and quality are separate axes, and this index measures the first.
How brands actually differ
Mostly by which categories they serve. Celestron spans everything from a $79.95 tabletop to intelligent observatories. Sky-Watcher is strongest on dobsonians and mounts. Explore Scientific spans beginner to premium. William Optics builds imaging refractors. Lunt builds solar instruments and nothing else.
