What a compact pair costs you, in order
- Light, first. An 8x25 has a quarter of the objective area of an 8x50. At midday your pupil is small and you will not notice; an hour after sunset your pupil is wide and you will.
- Exit pupil. Twenty five divided by eight is a little over three millimetres. A dark-adapted adult eye opens to six or seven, so more than half the eye is looking at nothing.
- Steadiness, oddly. Light binoculars shake more, not less, because there is less mass to damp your pulse. A heavier pair of the same magnification often shows more detail handheld.
- Eye relief. Compact designs have the least room behind the eyepiece, which is the specification that decides whether they work at all over spectacles.
Where a compact pair is the right instrument
Walking, travelling, and anything where the real competition is not a bigger pair of binoculars but no binoculars at all. A pocket pair used forty times a year beats a 10x50 used three times, and that is not a consolation argument: it is the main one.
They are also the sane choice for daylight wildlife at moderate range, for sport, and for reading detail on buildings and hills, all of which happen in light that a small objective handles perfectly well.
Where they are the wrong one
The night sky. A compact pair will show the moon nicely and the four bright moons of Jupiter on a steady night, and it will show almost nothing else that a 50mm pair shows: the fainter clusters, the sweep of the Milky Way, the smudge of Andromeda.
They are also poor at dusk and dawn, which is when most mammals move and when a lot of birding actually happens. If those hours are the point, the extra bulk of a 42mm or 50mm pair is buying exactly the thing you need.

- Yes, if the alternative is carrying nothing. They are a daylight instrument with a real weakness at dusk, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a good buy and a disappointment.
- What is the smallest useful size for astronomy?
- Around 40mm. Below that the exit pupil and the light grasp fall away quickly, and the night sky is exactly where that shows.
- Is 8x21 or 8x25 better?
- The 25mm pair, by about a third more light for a barely noticeable increase in bulk. If you are choosing between them and both fit the pocket you had in mind, take the larger objective.
