Choosing a spotting scope

  1. Objective size. Sixty to eighty millimetres covers most use. Bigger gathers more light for dusk and for higher magnification, and gets heavy quickly.
  2. Straight or angled. Angled is easier to share, easier at high elevation and easier to use at a lower tripod height. Straight is quicker to aim at something you can already see.
  3. The zoom range. Most ship with a 20x to 60x zoom. The top of that range is usable only in still air, which is a fact about the atmosphere rather than about the scope.
  4. The tripod. A spotting scope on a poor tripod is worse than binoculars. Budget for it as part of the instrument rather than as an accessory.

Spotting scope, binoculars or telescope

Binoculars win for finding things, for wide views and for comfort, because two eyes and no tripod beat one eye and three legs. A spotting scope wins when you need to read detail at distance in daylight: plumage, rings on a bird's leg, a score at a rifle range, a ship's name.

An astronomical telescope beats both at night by a wide margin, because it has more aperture and better eyepieces, and it loses in daylight because its image is often upside down or mirrored and its mount is built for the sky rather than for a horizon.

Using one on the night sky

It works, within limits. A 60mm to 80mm spotting scope at 20x to 40x shows lunar craters well, Jupiter's moons easily, Saturn's rings as an obvious ellipse, and the brighter clusters. What it will not do is go faint, because the aperture is modest and the zoom eyepieces are optimised for daylight contrast rather than for a dark field.

The practical catch is the tripod again: a photographic tripod that is fine at 20x in daylight will wobble unpleasantly at 40x on a star, because the target is a point of light and every vibration is visible.
