Choosing between dobsonian sizes
- Aperture against the boot of a car. A 200mm dobsonian is the size most often called the best all-round instrument. A 250mm shows more and weighs enough that many owners stop taking it anywhere.
- Tabletop or floor standing. Tabletop dobsonians need something waist high to stand on and are genuinely portable. Floor-standing ones need no table and two hands.
- Solid tube or collapsible. A collapsible or truss tube packs smaller for the same aperture and costs more. If the instrument lives in a cupboard and travels in a hatchback, that premium buys real use.
- What the number in the name means. By the trade's convention it is the aperture in millimetres, but a listing that does not state the aperture has not stated it, and this index will not fill it in.
What the printed figures show
Sky-Watcher prints $305.00 for its cheapest tabletop dobsonian, and Celestron's $79.95 tabletop reflector sits on the same kind of base at a quarter of the aperture. Across the two priced brands in this category the median printed entry price is $192.48, which is the middle of two figures rather than a market average and should be read as such.
The instructive part is what neither page says. Sky-Watcher's page carries the price and no aperture at all, so this index publishes none for it. The model is called the Heritage 130 and everybody in the hobby knows what that means, and an index that starts completing model numbers has started guessing.
What a dobsonian gives up
It does not track. At a hundred times magnification an object crosses the field of view in well under a minute, and you nudge the tube to keep up. Most people stop noticing within a week; photographers never stop noticing, which is why almost no serious astrophotography is done on one.
It also sits low. A floor-standing dobsonian pointed near the zenith puts the eyepiece somewhere awkward, which is why observers who use them own a stool they can adjust.
Common questions
- What size dobsonian should I buy?
- The largest one you will actually carry outside. For most people in a house with stairs that is 150mm to 200mm; for a flat with a lift and a car, 250mm is realistic.
- Is a dobsonian good for a beginner?
- It is the instrument most often recommended by people who already observe, because it puts the money into aperture and has almost nothing to go wrong. The two surprises are that it needs collimating occasionally and that a tabletop model needs a table.
- Can you photograph through a dobsonian?
- The moon and the bright planets, yes, with a phone or a planetary camera and short exposures. Deep sky objects need tracking, and an undriven dobsonian cannot give it.
