Four questions that pick a first telescope faster than a review does
- How much aperture does the money buy?. Aperture is the diameter of the main lens or mirror and it decides how much light the instrument collects and how fine a detail it can split. A 130mm mirror gathers nearly three times as much light as a 76mm one. Nothing else on the specification sheet moves the view that much.
- Will it be carried outside without a fuss?. The telescope that gets used is the one that goes out in a single trip. A tabletop dobsonian and a table is one trip; a long tube on a spindly equatorial mount is usually two, plus a wrestle in the dark.
- Does it need a table you do not own?. Tabletop instruments are the best value in this index and they all need something waist high to stand on. A garden chair is too low and a wall is rarely in the right place.
- What are you hoping to look at first?. The moon and the bright planets are easy in anything here. Faint galaxies and nebulae need aperture and a dark sky in that order, and no beginner instrument turns a streetlit garden into a dark site.

Read as a ladder, the money buys aperture almost linearly until it stops: $79.95 for 76mm, $91.00 for 114mm, $305.00 for an instrument whose model number says 130 and whose page says nothing. The middle rung is the interesting one, because it is a sale price, and a sale price is a reading with a date on it rather than a promise about next month.
The number the box shouts and the number that matters
Boxes at this end of the market are printed with magnification figures, 525x and the like, and magnification is set by the eyepiece rather than by the telescope. Any instrument can be pushed to any magnification; what decides whether the image holds together is aperture, and a 76mm reflector runs out of usable magnification somewhere near 150x on a steady night.

- On this shelf, mostly yes, because the extra money goes into aperture and into a mount that holds still. The exception is the specialist end: an apochromatic refractor at $498.00 gathers less light than a $305.00 dobsonian and costs more, because it is built for photography rather than for looking.
- Should I buy binoculars instead?
- It is the most common advice experienced observers give, and it is not a brush-off. If the honest answer to how often you will go outside is not often, binoculars are the instrument that gets used.
