Which telescope do I need?

Best telescope under 1000: best telescopes under 1000 and what the money adds

A thousand dollars is where the shelf stops being about beginner instruments and starts being about which kind of astronomer you are becoming. The three obvious answers are all good and they exclude each other, which is what makes the decision interesting.

A large dobsonian

Two hundred to two hundred and fifty millimetres of aperture, floor standing, no electronics. It shows more deep sky detail than anything else at the price by a wide margin: globular clusters resolve into stars, the brighter galaxies show structure, and planetary detail is limited by the air rather than by the instrument. The catch is size and the fact that it does not track.

A premium small refractor

William Optics prints $498.00 for its cheapest apochromat, and a thousand dollars buys a larger one. It gathers a fraction of the dobsonian's light and gives a cleaner, flatter star image across a camera sensor. If you already know you want to photograph rather than to look, this is where that money belongs.

A mid-sized instrument on a tracking mount

The compromise: 150mm or so on a driven equatorial or a computerised alt-azimuth. It finds and follows, it will take short planetary videos, and it will do modest deep sky imaging. It shows less than the dobsonian and photographs less well than the apochromat, and for a lot of people it is still the right buy because it does both adequately.

Questions people ask about telescope

What is the best telescope under a thousand dollars?

For looking, the largest dobsonian you will carry. For photographing, a small apochromatic refractor on a tracking mount. There is no single answer because the two jobs pull in opposite directions.

Is a thousand dollars enough for astrophotography?

For the moon, the planets and wide starfields, comfortably. For deep sky imaging it buys a starting setup, and the mount rather than the telescope will be the limiting factor.

Should I spend a thousand on a first telescope?

Only if you already know which direction you are going. Most people are better served by a three hundred dollar dobsonian and a year of use before spending the rest.
